U.S. Flight Training Requirements
U.S. students must meet certain Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements at specific stages of flight training. While not all requirements must be completed before training begins, students should understand what is required to solo and to earn pilot certificates. For this reason, Deland Aviation generally recommends completing applicable requirements at or near enrollment, when appropriate.
Basic Eligibility
There is no minimum age to begin flight training. Students may start lessons at any age; however, the FAA requires pilots to meet certain age and eligibility thresholds at later milestones.
Students must:
- Be able to read, speak, and understand English
- Be 16 years old to fly solo (or 14 if you plan to pilot a glider or balloon)
- Be 17 years old to earn a Private Pilot Certificate
Medical Clearance
An FAA Medical Certificate is required prior to solo flight. Medical certificates are issued by FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) and help ensure a student is medically qualified to operate an aircraft safely.
While not required to start training, students are generally encouraged to obtain a medical certificate early, when appropriate.

Student Certificate
Before flying solo, students must obtain a Student Pilot Certificate. This certificate authorizes a student to conduct solo flight under the endorsement of a certificated flight instructor. For more information on the process of obtaining a student pilot certificate, visit the FAA website.
A Student Pilot Certificate:
- Takes about three weeks to receive via mail
- Must be carried during solo operations
Pilot Certificate
The Private Pilot Certificate is earned after completing flight training and meeting FAA knowledge, flight experience, and testing requirements. This certification allows pilots to act as pilot in command and carry passengers for non-commercial purposes.
